Four different tax bills, and the worst and best are about a million dollars apart. The only thing that changed was the paperwork the executor filed after the funeral. Every dollar in a corp does one of three things. You spend it, you gift it, or you leave it. This one is about what you leave, because leaving it has a price. Path one, no planning, and I mean nobody lifts a finger. The CRA pretends you sold your shares the morning you died, then your family pulls the money out as dividends and pays tax again. Same dollar, taxed twice. On a nil cost base corp that bill runs past a million dollars. That's the floor, the worst case, the one almost nobody actually lands on. It's here to show you the ceiling on what the paperwork is worth. Path two, the loss carryback. Roughly $760,000 to $960,000. Path three, the pipeline. About $535,000. Path four, the hybrid. Empty the cheap pools first, then pipeline the rest. Often the winner: $430,000 to $520,000. The money in that container was never fully taxed. Deferral was a loan from the government, and the estate is where the loan gets called. The four paths are just four different interest rates on the same loan. None of this is do-it-yourself. Your CPA models it on your actual numbers. What you own is making sure the plan exists and your executor knows the play.
