South African jazz legend and cultural icon Abdullah Ibrahim has died at the age of 91. His family confirmed that the legendary pianist and composer passed away peacefully in Germany on 15 June 2026, following a brief illness. The Passing of a Legend The Location: He passed away at his home in the Bavaria region of Germany, surrounded by his loved ones. His Final Thoughts His partner, Dr Marina Umari, shared that he died peacefully "with South Africa and its people in his heart." Resting Place According to his family's wishes, his burial will take place locally in Bavaria. An Extraordinary Legacy Formerly known as Dollar Brand, Ibrahim was a towering figure in global music whose career spanned more than seven decades. His work seamlessly blended traditional African rhythms, gospel melodies, and modern jazz harmonies into a completely distinct genre. During the height of apartheid, his music became a powerful vehicle for resistance and hope. His seminal 1974 masterpiece, "Mannenberg," grew into the unofficial anthem of the anti-apartheid movement. Nelson Mandela once famously referred to Ibrahim as South Africa's equivalent to Mozart. A Final Masterclass Despite living abroad for many years, his ties to his homeland remained unbreakable. He kept touring and recording well into his nineties, leaving behind an astounding catalogue of over 70 records. His final public appearance in South Africa took place in March 2026, where he delivered a deeply moving headline performance at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. #colouredpride
