@_themostknownunknown_: On August 4, 2020, a fire at the Port of Beirut triggered one of the largest non-nuclear explosions ever recorded. This footage was filmed more than a mile away, yet the blast still appears terrifyingly close as the shockwave races across the city just seconds after the massive fireball erupts. The explosion was caused by approximately 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had been improperly stored at the port for years. The blast killed 218 people, injured around 7,000 others, destroyed large sections of the city, and displaced more than 300,000 residents. What makes this footage especially haunting is the distance. Even from more than a mile away, the force of the explosion was powerful enough to shake buildings, shatter windows, and overwhelm the camera with the sheer scale of the devastation. The Beirut port explosion remains one of the most devastating industrial disasters in modern history and serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of improperly storing hazardous materials. Isn’t that crazy how the speed of sound delays the way you hear the destruction, imagine traveling at the speed of sound while in that explosion, one split second compared to like 30 seconds of nonstop decibel level
