@_themostknownunknown_: In June 2015, 17-year-old Esperanza Quintero called 911 from a house party in Albuquerque, New Mexico after her friend, 17-year-old Jaydon Chavez-Silver, was accidentally shot. As Jaydon struggled to breathe, she desperately tried to explain the emergency while asking the dispatcher how she could help save him. The call gained national attention because Albuquerque Fire Department dispatcher Matthew Sanchez repeatedly questioned Quintero as she became increasingly panicked and emotional. Overwhelmed by the situation, she began shouting and using profanity. In response, Sanchez told her to “deal with it yourself” before ending the call. Although emergency responders had already been sent to the location, the recording sparked widespread outrage after it was released publicly. Jaydon Chavez-Silver later died from his injuries, and city officials condemned the dispatcher’s actions. Albuquerque Fire Chief David Downey described the handling of the call as “unforgivable,” prompting an internal investigation. Sanchez, who had served as a dispatcher for roughly ten years, resigned soon after the audio became public. The incident remains one of the most controversial 911 calls in U.S. history and prompted renewed discussions about emergency dispatcher training, professionalism, and the importance of remaining calm and supportive when assisting callers during life-threatening emergencies. Yeah, I was watching someone break into the house next door. It was the second attempt of the night. The first time the cops didn’t catch him. The second time the dispatcher asked “we’ve already been there once tonight, we are not coming back.” As though the police are only obligated to respond once per customer. I was a coach for little league with the Chief. That house was broken into and that dispatcher was reassigned.
