@atouchofgrace.diy: Before anyone says “but it’s non-toxic” 👀 let’s talk about that. A lot of people assume a citrus smell means a product is harmless, but a better smell doesn’t automatically mean you can skip safety precautions. Paint strippers are still chemical products designed to break down finishes. Citrus based or low odor strippers can still contain active solvents that help soften and dissolve finishes. That doesn’t mean they’re bad products, but it does mean they should still be treated like a chemical stripper. Use gloves, good ventilation, and avoid unnecessary exposure. I’m not saying those products don’t work. They absolutely have their place. My frustration was the process: wrapping pieces, waiting hours (sometimes overnight), and hoping the finish was actually ready to come off. The one I keep reaching for now works great on both painted pieces and stained pieces when I need to remove an old finish and start fresh. Here’s what my process looks like now: ✨ Shake the jug well before using
✨ Apply a THICK coat and work in manageable sections
✨ I usually let it sit around 15 to 30 minutes, but this depends on the temperature and weather conditions when you’re stripping
✨ Once the finish starts looking like wrinkly bath fingers, I use a carbide scraper to remove the bulk of it
✨ For details, trim, and stubborn areas, I use a soft scrub brush and a wire brush with a bucket of water to get into all those little grooves
✨ Clean the piece with mineral spirits and let it dry before moving on to finish sanding The biggest mistake I see is applying stripper too thin. If it dries out before it has a chance to work, you’re just creating more work for yourself. Don’t panic. Just apply more product and let it soften back up.
