@wise.roots.apothecary: Lets talk about yarrow and its ties to Achilles.. how its a first aid power house.. and why it shoule be in your materia medica. #yarrow #herbalremedy #naturalremedy #herbalmedicine #herbalist
Chewing yarrow and then packing it into an open wound would introduce bacteria and cause an infection. That traditional recommendation makes much less sense once you understand modern microbiology.
The human mouth contains hundreds of species of microorganisms. Once you chew the leaves, you're coating the yarrow with saliva and oral bacteria.
Putting that material into damaged tissue essentially inoculates the wound with those organisms. This is one reason human bites are notorious for becoming infected.
But I absolutely understand the benefits of herbalism, just not in regard to coating a fresh wound with bacteria ridden saliva.

Yarrow was also used, along with bog myrtle and marsh rosemary, to flavour small beer (Gruit). A common drink, brewed by Ale Wives, it had a low alcohol content and was highly nutritious. Gruit was extensively brewed by women until the introduction of hops which meant it was financially more viable to brew larger batches and then men took it over🌒🌑🌘

I can never do chew and spit poultices because I feel weird about the bacteria and yarrow is INCREDIBLY BITTER! I just smush the leaves up a little bit with my hands and slap it on there, still works

Hi, what’s good for staph on baby’s skin? Staph has become resistant to most of the antibiotics.

I put dried yarrow on an infected burn and it cleared it right up. Barely even left a scar.
