@holocaustmuseum: Before the summer of 1942, most residents of the Warsaw ghetto knew little about the Nazis' plan to murder Europe's Jewish population. But when mass deportations to the Treblinka killing center began in July 1942, many realized the ghetto would soon be emptied and its inhabitants murdered. In response, a group of young Jewish men and women founded the Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB) to resist the Nazis and disrupt future deportations. Starting with just one pistol, the ŻOB later gathered enough weapons to play a leading role in the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the largest act of Jewish armed resistance during the Holocaust.
