5 things I wish I knew before visiting Vanuatu 🇻🇺 Vanuatu has everything; adventure, incredible beaches and awesome people!! Here’s a few tips to make your trip there even smoother! 1.Mt Yasur is not a hike. It is a short walk from the 4WD drop off, so you will feel overdressed if you turn up in full trekking gear. A face mask or scarf is useful though, as the ash can blow straight into your face. 2.Million Dollar Point is not a managed tourist attraction. There are no lifeguards, facilities or sheltered entry points. The water can be rough, the current strong and you often end up completely alone. You need to be a very confident swimmer to snorkel around the military wreckage safely. 3.The outer islands are the real experience. Tanna, Santo and Malekula are easy to reach and far more beautiful and affordable than Port Vila. Vila is nice for a comfortable base, but the magic is elsewhere. 4.Public holidays can shut down the tourist scene. I visited during Easter and nearly every shop, market stall and local attraction was closed. Check dates before you go so that you can plan for the days things are closed. 5.Transport between islands is extremely set by the airline schedule. Flights can move, combine or shift times on the day, so keep your plans flexible. Once you know this, the whole trip becomes far less stressful. Bonus tip: pack reef shoes.
