I need to talk about how people dog on Yuki like she made geto go crazy as if it wasn't well established that he was cracking WAY before that. just because she (and Shoko for that matter) didn't immediately become sweet and dare I say 'motherly,' people act like anyone but geto and toji had a hand in how he turned out. shoko and Yuki aren't submissive or pliant in nature WHY would that change just because a leading man is the one struggling?

I will say Gege did cook with Maki. I have never felt so much pride in a character. I also weirdly think the conversation with Nobara and Momo is very in tune to modern expectations for women. A scar on a woman is an ugly flaw, while for men it’s seen as some sort of badge of honor when at the end of the day- they’re both scars

the potential of Shoko's character only to be overlooked. She's basically the only healer, while others can mourn for someone she has to pry their body open first. She lost all of the people she went to school with, be that her batchmates or kouhai and we didn't even see her grieve?!?!?!?!?

it’s always like this. Male characters get to be complex and well written, while female characters are either treated as fan service, labeled “annoying” for getting between two male characters or introduced as strong only to be sidelined so the male characters can look even stronger. it’s frustrating how often their potential gets reduced to supporting someone else’s story.

Idk if it's just me noticing this but I've seen how ppl are SO quick to dump hate on a female antagonist while male antagonists get entire fcking dissertations explaining their trauma, motivations, complexity n why they're actually "misunderstood" (Gabi from aot is literally the example) 😭 n I'm not even talking abt the sexualization of female characters here bc that's a whole other convo like if a female character betrays someone, people immediately jump her! "she's a b**, she's unforgivable, she's the worst character ever, they hope she dies" whatever but when a male character does the exact same shi suddenly it's "I hate what he did BUT I understand why he did it 🥺" or "u have to understand his perspective" or "he's such a complex character" LIKE??? where tf was all this media literacy five minutes ago when it was a woman?? same thing with characters doing genuinely evil or morally questionable shi.. male villains can murder ppl, manipulate everyone around them, destroy entire lives n fandoms will still sit there analyzing every little nuance of their character which is FINE!!! that's literally what makes fictional characters interesting but why does that curiosity and willingness to understand suddenly disappear so often when the antagonist is a woman???? I'm not saying we should normalize or excuse shitty behavior just bc a character is female! that's not my point at all.. u can condemn what a character does while still recognizing that they're complicated and trying to understand why they did it like.. we already do that with male characters ALL THE TIME!! It's just smt I've noticed even among women in fandom spaces which makes it even more interesting to me. Female characters sometimes feel like they have to pass this insane morality test just to be tolerated while male characters are allowed to be messy, cruel, selfish, traumatized, morally gray or straight up evil and still be considered fascinating characters.. like damn can women at least be complicated fictional a*holes in peace too?? 😭💔
