I am always surprised by how many people spend months on Upwork and Fiverr hunting for clients while completely overlooking the opportunities in front of them. We have convinced ourselves that only wazungu can pay properly. Everyone wants the American client paying in dollars, and meanwhile Kenya is full of businesses that need exactly what you do. I stopped using those platforms. I concentrated on my own country. Do I get international clients? Yes, sometimes. But the majority of my work is right here. And there is a reason that works. Very few people are competing for these clients, because everyone is looking abroad. Look around properly. New small and medium businesses open every single week. They need websites. They need digital marketing. They need social media managers, virtual assistants, video editors, content shooters. That demand is sitting there unserved. Now here is the part most people miss. You are not paid for showing up. You are paid for solving a problem, especially a money problem. Take a furniture store. If my digital marketing helps them consistently generate over a million shillings monthly in revenue, do you think they will hesitate to pay me 100,000 a month? Of course not. That is a straightforward business decision for them. Get two clients like that locally and you are earning 200,000 a month. Without dollars. Without Upwork. What people are actually avoiding is the work. Walking into businesses. Pitching. Proving results. One honest warning though. Be selective. Some local clients will genuinely frustrate you.
