I’ve always seen the Wall in Hadestown as a Sisyphean task. Busy work to keep everyone distracted from anything else.

It's such an impactful way to illustrate how the rich have always oppressed and manipulated the working class.

guys the song is not about Trump. the song was written in 2005. it is political but Hadestown is much more complex and layered than a simple criticism of the orange menace

Hades in Greek mythology is a god of wealth, but in the way a dragon hoards money. He’s not a god of prosperous wealth. This is actually very fitting for his character

What’s funny is this wasn’t even about trump like many believed it to be. It existed years before Trump ran for president.

The amount of people who keep on going “bbbut this song isn’t about trump” as if trump invented politics or something.

every art will be political, even the ones who are made for resting your mind. if the rest is necessary, there is excessive labor.

I can’t imagine thinking hadestown isn’t political when I find it quite heavy handed personally 😹 but that’s what reminds me that some people need a heavy handed message

Every time he opened his mouth to sing, I kept thinking, it’s so hard to dislike Hades when he has that voice!

My friend looked at me in the theater and was like “do you think someone didn’t understand this and made an edit supporting Trump and the wall” and I just stared at her

My favorite part of this song is “we have the wall to work upon” as if that’s a gift. Perfectly encapsulates how the upper class doesn’t need to defend themselves - the middle and lower class will fight to their dying breath doing it for them, all while they give us the bare minimum.

Cesar Parreño :
Despite this being written in 2005, the idea of the wall is not something that started with the orange wart. The wall is most definitely a reference to the southern border of the US and their treatment of immigrants. There is absolutely no way this is not intentionally political even if it was before his presidency.

when it hit Broadway, was when the news broke that the US government "lost" thousands of immigrant children. the theater was sobbing silently at the end of this song. it was HEAVY.
this song is always relevant to every era but man does it hit in the gut now.
