A will obviously states how she would have liked her assets to be divided up and you send the will off when applying for probate. As your mum didn’t have a will, you’ll need to do the probate on intestacy rules which basically is probate without a will. Instead of a grant of probate, you’ll be given a letter of administration.Tell us once is good to use. Gather all her paperwork together and some paper and literally do 2 Collums, assets and liabilities and list them.Contact the companies that she had assets with and ask their requirements to release funds. They may say that they will release funds based on just a death certificate or they may require

Look at intestancy law in Scotland. Sorry for your loss 💔 Dependant on the bank, they might allow you to close the account, if not you’ll need consistency from the local sheriff court.

You can go on Gov website after a death and there will contact all governments agencies to cancel and remove her from databases. Did for my brother and mother.

The tell us once saved me a huge amount of stress when my dad passed 6 months ago. It has a reference code that would come with the death certificate but if not contacting your local council that the certificate was registered with then they can provide one. Do expect to receive some letters from the service a few months later and some letters come to you fairly quickly just confirming everything has been cancelled. Life insurances and other insurance policies is the next place to do, bank with death certificate to close accounts. If there’s mortgages etc then getting in contact with those people. Any debts from retailers etc getting in contact with them to close accounts down. If you have access to her email it can help as well incase there’s anything she payed for or had taken out that you may not be aware of. It’s the crappiest part of the grief journey even one thing each day can reduce it getting too overwhelming. The worst part personally was the belongings part but truly keep clothing that holds memories, same with any other items in the house. If there’s things that are too good to be thrown away then even selling and using the money from the items to pay for a memorial/memorials your mum. I wished there was a guide for it all when it all fell on my shoulders to handle but you’ll be able to do it, just one day at a time.

It's the hardest ever. I was an incoherent bumbling mess for that first week of having the death witnessed, death certificate application, funeral director. Start the process, some awesome professionals (registrar/director) will ease the logistics. I'm 3 years in, and still have much of mum's stuff. Take your time. It's very raw and upsetting when sorting their history and ensuring they're remembered.

“Tell us once” does it all for you, once you have the death certificate you send into them and they will deal with it for you. 6 months in though and I’m yet to sort anything out that belonged to my mum I just boxed everything up and put everything into the spare room.

I was the same. My parents died within 53 days of each other and no will. they had a bought house. I had a solicitor but they just dealt with the house. they applied to court for me to be the executor etc. I paid all bills closed accounts and eventually got the house sold. its exhausting repeatedly telling people x

Have a look at my lost account and also the pension tracing website as as there could be lost policies and pensions. I had to do this for my dad. None of it was in place with my mum so it took a long time to go through everything ❤️it’s a hard process, so just do the necessary immediate things for now

My mum didnt have a will, but I was only child. Which was easy as it all went to me. Contacted banks through bereavement section on website. They sent me all moneys via bank transfer. I had the death certificate. And registered the death. No property so that made it easier. Probate only needed for large estates.

There’s a website called tell us once, and others that you can notify. For mobiles, utilities, council tax, pensions etc

Currently doing my mum’s. I’m a month ahead of you. I did a spreadsheet adding all the direct debits etc from her bank and I’ve been working through contacting them to notify them/ change it to me. It’s tough have to speak to strangers and say it out loud but needed. I’m now sorting her clothes out (Vinted/ charity/ bin) which I’m surviving but her bedside drawers are hitting differently as it’s really personal stuff to her - diaries, letters, old glasses and passports. No use to anyone but I’m leaving it til last.
