My public defender told me “just take the deal, otherwise you will sit here in jail for a year or more and it will be the cops word against yours. If you plead you leave today. It’s just a misdemeanor. It’s not worth what this will do to your life.” That’s how I ended up with a “designer drug” charge when I was 19 years old in NYC. The real crime? Being homeless when Obama was about to come to town. The NYPD had paddy wagons everywhere and were shouting “we’re cleaning the trash off the streets!”. I look around and it was ALL HOMELESS PEOPLE I recognized in the van. Absolutely disgusting. I will forever feel injustice for that because I didn’t do the crime- I had no drugs, especially not crack, which I’ve never done in my life. Just arrest me for something I’ve actually done, PLEASE!

reading three felonies a day was an eye opener for me. basically you take the safe route plead guilty and cooperate with the government, or you risk a much higher sentence to try and prove your innocence. many innocent folks ended up in jail just to avoid a trial which may or may not do them justice

I distincly remember being told I could reject the plea deal and go to trial, but it would cost me additional legal fees. The felony I got through the plea deal still causes problems in my life 15 years later even having done nothing else.

They also make it almost impossible to get a hold of friends/family from inside jail with the new Securas phone system that they make money on, you can't just collect call anybody, only people who signed up for Securas phone services.

As a person of this system more than several times during the worst times of my life, as well as having friends and loved ones who have gone thru this- much more so for those who are poor or persons of color... THANK YOU! I am working on expungement and pardons now but it's a long and expensive process.... incarceration of everyday Americans is destroying those ppl- causing Trama before the arrest, during the arrest, after the arrest, and during prison sentencing( I could tell you stories that you would swear are made up but absolutely are not) and then expect those same ppl to get out with absolutely no help or "rehabilitation" as all funding has been cut from these programs for at least 2 decades as most politicians/ justice officials are pocketing the money, and these ppl are expected to go back to being productive members of society but now with all that Trama, financial and community loss, now with a felony!!!! what most "normal" citizens are told about jails/prison systems are absolute lies!!!

At the very least, no one should be detained for a misdemeanor. I see people all the time in my work who were held for years on non-violent misdemeanors.

Am I horrified? Yes. Am I remotely surprised? No. It's not the whole reason (our country is on fire), but having privatized prisons is certainly a big portion of the issue.

To add: a lot of low-level crimes are a pain to fight. Where I work, you have to show up to arraignment, then pretrial, then docket sounding, and then plot to take a whole week off for the trial. As you mentioned, finances play a role in a person deciding to plea and be done

The amount of money spent on keeping people in jail is insane! Especially the people who haven’t bonded out or can’t afford a lawyer, yet it costs $60k a year to keep them locked up. I really don’t understand how it costs so much. Or the death penalty?! So much money for what?! Yet we’re worried about what people do with their food stamps 🙄

They threatened me with 67 years if I don't plead to probation. They said I would be held in jail indefinitely (year+), and upgrade charges, if I tried to fight it at a trial. They knew they would lose at a trial, so they threatened to revoke bond and hold me in jail if I tried to fight it.
