@simonkerleatomicliving: A breathing technique practised for five thousand years. Modern neuroscience is now proving exactly why it works. It is called nadi shodhana. Alternate nostril breathing. Each nostril connects to different neural pathways and different branches of your autonomic nervous system. Alternating between them creates a cross stimulation effect that research confirms produces measurable changes in brain activity within minutes. Research published in the International Journal of Yoga found that just five minutes of nadi shodhana significantly reduced heart rate, blood pressure, and sympathetic nervous system activity. EEG studies confirm measurable changes in brain wave patterns during practice associated with reduced anxiety and improved cognitive performance. The benefits are immediate and well documented. Sharper focus. Lower anxiety. Better decisions. Improved sleep. Greater emotional resilience. Five minutes. No equipment. Free. Here is how. Inhale through your left nostril. Close it. Exhale through your right. Inhale right. Close it. Exhale left. That is one round. Do five. Ancient wisdom. Modern proof. The anatomy doesn’t work that way. The left and right nasal cavities are separated anteriorly by the nasal septum, but they communicate posteriorly through the choanae into the common nasopharynx before air continues through the same airway to the lungs. There’s no anatomical pathway where one nostril delivers air to one cerebral hemisphere and the other nostril to the other. While alternate-nostril (Nadi Shodhana) breathing may promote relaxation through autonomic nervous system effects, claims that each nostril directly “connects to” a different half of the brain aren’t supported by anatomy or any evidence.

Unfortunately a deviated septum means one nostril is blocked.

I’m an elementary school librarian and we start each class with a little breathing. Excited to add this to the opening! Thanks for sharing. Any other suggestions?

Use the forefinger and the thumb to close the left and the right nostrils while breathing in and out. Its an ancient Indian technique.

do u literally close ur nostril, like putting ur finger on it or do u close it mentally? I promise I'm not an idiot, I just want to do this right and I'm autistic so I don't know if i should take this literally or not 😅

Its an ancient Indian technique. Just one of the many Indian breathing techniques. Pranayama and kapal bhaathi are also powerful breathing techniques.

If you pay attention; our body switches the nostril for breathing on its own. At least my body does.

Ok I just did this, while sitting here waiting for my dogs to do their business & I instantly felt calm & wide awake. I did it outside, sitting with my eyes closed. I love this ❤️I’m trying harder to live a more holistic life. I do take a migraine shot monthly & I hate that I have to, I’m searching for a reason instead of a prescription.
