@collegecoach_dan: Your Essay Is Already Behind Many families think the personal statement starts when the Common App opens. That sounds logical. It’s also how students end up writing the most important essay of the application while senior year is starting, activities are picking back up, supplements are piling on, and the essay is still stuck at the surface. The personal statement is not just a massive writing assignment. It’s also a thinking process. Students need time to try the obvious topic, realize it might not be the real one, talk through better angles, throw out the version that sounds impressive but empty, and eventually find the story that reveals something unique and compelling about who they are. That very rarely happens in one clean draft. I’ve only seen it done once in 14 years as a college admissions consultant. So yes, the Common App opens August 1st. But that does not mean August 1st is the time to begin. By then, I want to see a student already in the work: testing ideas, revising structure, figuring out what their essay is really trying to say.
