In the second grade, after reading the book, our teacher had us all bring in an ingredient so we could make our own stone soup. She was tearing into a bunch of second graders saying that if they didn’t bring in their ingredient, they weren’t being a part of the community. Day of, she drops the bomb that she forgot the stones.

We have a local non profit that hands out free soup, based on the Stone Soup idea. She collects veggie scraps and bones from donations from the community and makes a huge pot of soup and she does a big hand out once a month as well as deliveries.

My mom was a kindergarten teacher. She would read stone soup and do the same with her students. She also would read Streganona and make spaghetti

This is a Portuguese tale and as it goes a priest goes up to a wealthy, greedy man’s house and tells him he can teach him how to make a full soup with just a stone if he allows him to use his kitchen and fire, he even promises to leave him the stone after. The man who wants to save up money on food eagerly says yes. The priest boils some water with the stone inside and goes “almost there, it would be better if we added potatoes” so the man who is curious and eager goes and gets some potatoes to add in. So then the priest says “almost there, would be better with some carrots” and so on and so forth until he had a full soup with veggies and meat and etc. He left the stone with the man and shared the soup with the village. We have this town from where this folk tale comes from and they do the soup stone and all. It’s a traditional portuguese soup “sopa da pedra”
