I think the reason the adult scream is so much stronger because a kid their parents probably just tell them it’s their imagination or it was just a bad dream when the monsters scare them but with an adult, they know they’re not dreaming or hallucinating so it’s more like a primal fear, a genuine fear for their life.

i honestly believe that the intention behind the fear made it more powerful, all children have a inherent fear of scary monsters they can’t understand. However those adults were not afraid of a monster, mike and sully made them believe fully that they were about to die and it was inescapable fear of death. (My Take)

A room full of adults filled more scream containers than Sully's sleepover scare in the first movie. Adults are scared of more complex things. Children are scared of the basics. Adult screams hold more complex emotions than children because children feel basic fear.
