This has been so freeing for me! I used to think it was honorable to stay committed until resolve was reached. To ‘see’ them even if they didn’t ’see’ me. However, honoring myself enough to clearly state my standards and needs while letting the cards fall where they may, has given me peace where I once felt duty. I trust that what is revealed is the honest truth. I let go of the responsibility for fixing a relationship or ensuring that I am understood. I’m open to repair, and will be constructive if an opening presents, but I do not need to convince anyone to work at the relationship with me.

A lack of capacity means they can’t do the thing, they don’t know about capacity because they don’t have the capacity to do that. You don’t expect a cup to hold more than physics allows. If they don’t have capacity you need to look at where you are aiming, if it’s outside their capacity you have an opportunity to make the relationship better, they can’t do it because they don’t have the capacity.

If conversations especially repeated ones do not change the behavior, distance won’t magically fix it either. They may be anxious that you’re pulling away and there’s actual consequences to their lack of accountability now, but once you get back into your “normal routine” that mask falls off and you’re back to square one. You can’t teach lack of accountability. If someone has no integrity, that’s it. Case closed
