mixing up several different concepts.
* Ancestry = who your ancestors were and where your family comes from.
* Ethnicity = a shared cultural/historical identity, which can include ancestry, language, traditions, and self-identification.
* Nationality = a person’s legal/political membership in a country, usually through citizenship.
* Being born somewhere = birthplace; it doesn’t automatically determine ethnicity or nationality.
And the Quebec example actually shows why these concepts shouldn’t be treated as identical. A Québécois person can have French ancestry and a French-derived culture without being a French citizen. Conversely, a person can be French by nationality without having French ancestry going back generations.
Also, “French people are white” isn’t a definition of French ethnicity. French identity has never been limited to one racial category. A Black French person whose family has lived in France for generations is no less French because of their skin color.
