The Jacksons almost signed with Capitol Records but took the Philadelphia International/Epic Deal because of The Slyvers was already signed to Capitol Records,Freddie Perrin left Motown for that same reason because Berry Gordy was ripping him off Norman Whitfield Holland-Dozier-Holland left Motown because Berry Gordy was ripping them off too.After The Jacksons left Motown, Motown Records went downhill the only thing that kept a float and saved Motown was Marvin Gaye Diana Ross,Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson was still their biggest selling artists and movies like Cooley High, Mahogany,Bingo Long Travelling All stars and Motorkings keep Motown Motown Records going

that one of the problems I have with the michael jackson movie, there not telling us anything about what happened at motown, how much is berry gordy making off the jackson 5, did they get paid off the tv appearance and shows? it's only in the jackson ministries that they give us little information of what the business was like at motown. they just made a switch from motown to epic

I always think about this and many other moments when airheads on here and other parts of the Internet want to talk about how Michael should’ve be “grateful” for Joseph and Barry, Quincy Jones, etc., or how some fans shouldn’t dislike them, when ppl like THIS in MJ live had legit use and abuse AND F him over in life, like multiple times in certain situations, smfh…🧍🏽♀️

In the music business many music artists (including the Jacksons) had to repay the label for their music videos, musicians, marketing, etc. That why some music acts are “one hit” wonders. If their record is a flop, the artist is done.

Actually that was the typical record deal back in those days, see the TLC story and others who broke bad contracts. Also Motown signed the Jackson Five to its contract while they were under contract with Steeltown Records so this isn’t new. Steeltown just didn’t have resources to do anything about it.
