Tbh as a WOC myself although I do think her use of that trope as an example was misplaced and inappropriate to the review, I do think that the core of what she was trying to say makes sense to me, especially when it comes to Helen. You take a character like Helen and cast a beautiful actress like Lupita that causes controversy among reactionaries and bigots, and then dilute her character into an abused, mutilated trophy wife. On one hand I can see the positives of elevating and celebrating these actors in their roles, but on the other hand the choices in the screenplay made it feel distasteful.

I thought she also used such an inappropriate trope to compare the POC performances too when these characters were always supporting in the story no matter their race. She’s reducing these great performances

Emily Wilson also wrote a very condescending mean girl critique of Anne Carson. Personally the trend is pretty telling of her character.

I agree with your take completely. Cyclops! Make that post too! Helen and Clytemnestra are 2 sides of the same coin. Sisters or twins in some myths, one was viewed as a beauty because she was sweet and docile while the other one is the embodiment of rage and revenge. Nolan’s choice to have one actress play them both and one came home to abuse and the other was home waiting to murder - amazing. Chefs kiss. I liked his take here. And Nyong’os performance was perfect.

Can we also talk about how her complaining about not having any sxe scenes is a weird take given a women’s control/power during intimacy at the time.
