I am a maintenance man at Ashland’s McDonald’s. I know for a fact that my and my other maintenance man keep it clean and working. I have cleaned ours for 15 years. Now the fact is it’s rarely ever broken and this goes for most states. I’ll tell you why it became a joke. There is a nightly heat cycle that it has to go through and it takes 4 hours. So if you’re working at a 24 hour store and someone asks for ice cream during the heat cycle the person says our machine is down or our machine is broken instead of explaining that it’s going through a process that keeps it safe to eat until mandatory 2 week cleaning cycle. Which takes 4 hours to clean. And when customers come through while it’s being cleaned guess what the order taker says? Our ice cream machine is down. Not down for cleaning, just that it’s down🤦♂️. Here’s the true story behind the broken ice cream machines (for the largest maturity of time). It can break down but it’s actually a very reliable machine if cleaned properly.

I've live here in Ashland Kentucky since 2000 and it's never been done at all.. and I'm from San Diego California and I was born there and moved here when my grandma passed away in 1999!! so Ive lived here along time!!! and its never been down at all!! now in the morning at a certain time it is turned off because they clean it!!! but it's never been broken down!!!

As someone who used to live in Ashland, I hear that phrase way more often now that I don't live there. I think Flatwoods is better though. I don't think I've ever heard their ice cream machine is down.
