@drdeborahparenting: A child starts hitting when they feel frustrated, and most parents correct the hit in the moment. They say, "Don't hit." "We don't do that." "Say sorry." Those words name the behavior, but they do not complete the system. Because after the correction, everything goes back to normal. The child goes right back to the same toy. The same sibling. The same game. Now the child learns that hitting gets corrected, but access does not actually change. Here's what to do instead. Starting at age 2, before the moment, state the rule once and keep it short: "If you hit, play stops." Then if they hit, say one sentence: "You hit. Play stops." Now follow through. If they hit over a toy, the toy is unavailable. If they hit a sibling, they move away from the sibling. If they hit during play, play stops. No lecture. The sentence is not the system. The system is what happens before, during, and after the hit. That is how hitting stops becoming a moment you keep correcting and starts becoming a behavior the household has a system for. I work at a daycare and we have a few kids who do this but we aren’t allowed to discipline them other than sending them home if it’s really serious. One kid also finds it funny to hit others just for fun. Any advice on what to do?

Okay, and what about emotion regulation then? A child has to learn this. As a child psychologist, I know that saying, “I see you are frustrated, but that doesn’t mean you are allowed to hit. What you can do is (name examples of emotion regulation)” teaches a child to regulate their emotions.

How do you tell them before they hit if you don’t know when they will hit? This is what we struggle with.

What happens when your kid is not hitting because of toys like they’re just my kids are insane when all three of them are together constant screaming. I do have one that specifically hits and then the other one hits back obviously they’re both boys, but it’s just chaotic hell in my house and I’m autistic and they’re all autistic so I honestly don’t know if normal parenting is something that can work for all of us, especially with me being ADHD and having anxiety and having PTSD and BPD from being abused as a child so I’m terrified to punish my children all sorts of fun stuff I’d be interested to hear if what your thoughts are on like this fact that basically were a whole family of autistics and then being a parent who’s highly traumatized

In our household we ask them to apologize, but for the full thing. Not just "sorry" "I'm sorry for hitting you." Then we ask, "what's going on? Why are we feeling this way?" People bash gentle parenting. But I need to say that my 6 year old is more well spoken and emotionally intelligent than most adults I know. Do not beat your kids. Talk to them. They're entire human beings with thoughts and feelings, too.
