@traddpitt: @dolce asked me what are two things I love about traditional tattooing and two things I don’t. For me, patchwork is one of the best parts of the style. It lets your tattoo journey evolve over a lifetime instead of feeling like you have to finish everything at once. You get tattooed by different artists, in different chapters of your life, and somehow it all comes together into one story. The second is the history. I love hearing how the old-school tattooers had to engineer, modify, and build machines, figure things out through trial and error, and push the craft forward with pure ingenuity. That history is a huge part of what makes traditional tattooing so special. What I don’t like is when people call it “simple.” There’s nothing simple about mastering traditional. The best artists have an incredible understanding of machines, skin, color theory, saturation, line weight, and longevity. Making something look effortless is usually the hardest thing to do. And I also think “flash” gets unfairly looked down on. These designs have survived for decades for a reason. They’ve been tested on real skin, carry deep roots in tattoo history, and are proven to age well. There’s something reassuring about knowing you’re wearing artwork that’s stood the test of time.
