@drspf: With recent events in Seattle, I am especially pi$sed off and these 🗑️ claims online around sunscreen is getting old. Listen up, class: Skin cancer is not new—we’ve found evidence of melanoma in mummies dating back to the 4th century BCE. And just because you’ve had a lot of sun and are “doing fine” doesn’t make your personal experience scientific evidence—even if you have a degree in anthropology. We’re living longer, accumulating more UV exposure, and experiencing age-related immune changes, all of which increase skin cancer risk. Take care everyone and special shoutout to my Seattle community. My heart is with everyone affected by yesterday’s events. 🙏❤️ #SkinCancer #SkinCancerAwareness #SunscreenMyths #Debunked #wearyoursunscreen

When people refer to ancestors thriving in the sun without sunscreen, we are referring to preneolithic times. Not 100-200 years ago. Another dermatology classic

Coffee. People used to think coffee was bad for you (increase in hypertension, cancer, etc). We don’t think that anymore because we learned that the people they studied SMOKED CIGARETTES with their cup of Joe!! The same could apply here with TANNING BEDS. Yes, more people are using sunscreen, but tanning bed usage really increased from the 1970s and on.

I respect you Dr. sugai, but you clearly took that clip out of context. I checked the source, he was asking a question to an expert in the field, not asserting a fact. He basically said “this never made sense to me, can you explain how this works?” Don’t be manipulating audiences doc. That’s how you’re going to inadvertently send hate at creators, do better

The fact that people in the comments are still arguing with this is both sad and hilarious.

Saying it was hard to live to 50 is disingenuous… technically a true statement because of a high infant mortality rate but you would likely live way past 50 if you made it past infancy. So your entire first point about skin cancer being more prominent over age 50 because that didn’t happen 100-200 years ago doesn’t work.

Skin cancer has literally been documented in ancient India, Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, ancient Egypt, etc. they would literally walk around with tumors on their skin. Tumors have been found on Mummies.

Approximately 8000 people die of skin cancer a year in the US and the average age is 75-84 which is higher than the morality rate. It’s way overblown by fear mongers.
