The sad thing is, as minorities, we are expected to be the perfect victim. Blameless in all ways. Passive and civil in the face of aggressive incivility. Maintain (somehow) in retrospect, a flawless mistake free and "sin" free past. Its infuriating, and I hate that you were put in this position. But I am PROUD to be in the same community as you. As a fellow survivor of horrible things I will not detail, I 100% agree that a world where victims can safely have a reasonable crashout and go a bit bonkers in response to a bonkers situation would be a better one. However; I do think that comments like “you handled it so well” and “you’re so strong” is meant to remind victims that they have continually made a choice to take a higher road despite it being nearly impossible, and thus it is a reminder that the victim has successfully maintained their agency and free will in a situation that could have very easily taken it away even with the risk of disenfranchisement being there to make it feel like losing control is not an option. Those comments aren’t necessarily denying the fact that not crashing out is the only option to retain a decent quality of life— In fact, I’d argue that they are meant to compliment you on your continued successful effort to not just stay alive but to have a life well-lived like a mf superhuman. I don’t think they’re saying “ok good job, you achieved the bare minimum to be worthy of respect and that takes a lot of effort.” Rather, I think they’re they’re expressing something similar to them watching the Olympics and seeing an ice skater do a bunch of crazy stuff on the ice and thinking “holy CRAP. I would have fallen on my face just trying to put those damn skates on! I have no clue how we’re the same species.” Because at the end of the day, being at risk of being killed by a fascist government for “poorly representing” one’s country by getting a bad score doesn’t make the feat any less impressive nor does it make people saying “wow they’re so strong” or “wow they handled that insanely difficult backflip so well” less of a compliment!
