I respectfully disagree, I believe that him turning around is selfish, he didn't fully trusted her to love him enough to follow behind him. I feel like it's just like if you are in a relationship and constantly check your partners phone, even though they are not doing anything wrong you still check, just in case. For me that's not enough love and trust.

To remind you, Hades made it so that Orpheus couldn't hear her or her footsteps. He only had his mind, which was already on the brink of madness from those 3 long years of travelling down there. Hades made it fair but warned that a man's mind can drive him mad. If he just ignored the doubt, both would have made it. And in one version, he made the threshold and was so excited that he turned before Eurydice can step through. So TLDR, I cried. :)

Some people in the comments fail to realize that he wasn’t allowed to look at her for 2 YEARS traveling out of the Underworld. There are many interpretations to why he turned around, but the original text translated it to him wanting to kiss her too quickly right at the entrance. I don’t think there’s anything more romantic or tragic than that 🥺

I think this stands better for the original myth. In the musical adaptation , she had already chosen to leave him once so it does make sense that he would feel the need to turn around for reassurance.

Orpheus is FLAWED!!!! he was ALWAYS going to turn back no matter what, it's the main reason Hades gave this specific task to him. Hades knew that Orpheus would turn back regardless of the circumstances 💔💔

I don’t really get why you all think Orpheus was so in love with her. Orpheus was in love with the gods. He let her leave to look for food while writing. To truly love is to have faith in your partner and to rely on delayed gratification. To look back is to lean on instant gratification. Orpheus is the story of a man too in love with himself and his talent and the approval of gods that he traded eurydice and spring and summer just to look at her. To look isn’t love. And all he can say is “it’s you” OF COURSE ITS ME WHO ELSE WOULD IT BE WILLY WONKA??

im so tired of people arguing that it was selfish and he would have still gone to save her even if he didnt turn around but people who say that are completely missing the point that they were ALWAYS destined to be doomed. an orpheus that didnt turn around really would have never went after her in the underworld cause he wouldnt have been the same fated soul who would always turn to check on his love as hades and persephone did
