PLEASE KEEP TALKING ABOUT THIS! I am one of the ppl who works these cases! One of the biggest hurdles is getting ppl to help. If you have done a commercial DNA test you can upload your DNA data to www.dnasolves.com to help identify unidentified remains. PLEASE consider contributing your DNA! It can connect you out to the 3rd cousin so you may be able to help someone you don't even know!

My aunt’s cold case was the first in history where they were able to ID the victim and the murderer via genealogy. My family finally got closure after 33 years!

Long-time investigative genetic genealogist here! First of all THANK YOU for uploading to GEDmatch. Most folks don’t realize we can /only/ use that and FamilyTreeDNA, not AncestryDNA, not 23&Me, nor any other website. A couple of things: 1. The opt-in on GEDmatch is for matching to violent crime suspect samples only. Unidentified human remains (John/Jane Doe) cases have access to opted-in AND opted-out kits, and many of those UHRs are homicide victims. But if you’re opted out, someone working on a DNA sample from a crime /suspect/ won’t see your kit. 2: Anyone wanting to upload to GEDmatch, your kit is useless to us if we can’t identify who your family is. So please consider also uploading your family tree via GEDCOM (google the family website you use plus “download gedcom”), or link your Wikitree profile. Also now, Ancestry and MyHeritage have updated their TOS so if your family tree is ONLY there, we can’t use it. It does make our job SO much easier if you can link your tree on GEDmatch. 😅

As a genetic genealogist you are a gold mine. Very few people get back to you let alone spend that much time.💜

GEDmatch is so cool. I matched with a woman who has been tracing one single pair of ancestors from Russia. There are about 40 of us in the group who match at least one of the ancestors directly. My DNA profile on the standard websites show no Russian ancestry but I share DNA with several Siberian mummies. Crazy.

I uploaded mine to GEDmatch as well & my DNA was connected to unidentified human remains. I haven’t received any further information. That was a little over a year ago.

protecting bad people helps no one... if a crime was committed, there is a whole family who lost their loved one and deserves answers... you did the right thing.

Don't totally discount having native blood. Both my granny's were full-blood; one Cherokee and one Choctaw. Cherokee granny married a Welsh/Irish man and Choctaw granny's husband was Mexican. I was born with green eyes and curly red hair that later turned strawberry blonde, but is now dark. I look native NOW, but for the first probably third of my life, I looked like one of the most European babies ever born.
