Hi Celia, If this is based on a real encounter, then I'd have to agree with your friends—you should make the first move. One thing I've learned is that genuinely good people rarely see themselves the way everyone else does. They tend to underestimate their own beauty, kindness, intelligence, and the qualities that make them so special. My guess is that this man saw exactly what everyone else sees in you: someone who is beautiful, brilliant, and impossible not to notice. The problem is that he may have convinced himself you were completely out of his league. Instead of risking rejection—or even worse, making you uncomfortable—he chose to say nothing at all. Sometimes the greatest obstacle isn't a lack of interest; it's a lack of confidence. One of my favorite movie quotes is from We Bought a Zoo: "You know, sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage. Just, literally, 20 seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it." I think there's a lot of truth in that. Sometimes all it takes is a little courage to change the course of a story. You'll never know what could have been unless one of you is willing to take that first step.
