Before starting huge projects, go to walmart and buy precut fabric and try to make bows. Buy cutting shears AND rotary scissors, I bought rotary scissors just in case and I genuinely cannot live without them anymore. When sewing make sure your tension is between 3-4 so the fabric doesn’t bunch of and put your thread under and behind the presser foot. Lastly, when you’re sewing, make sure to start 1 inch away from the start of your fabric and do a reverse stitch for about 3 stitches when you start sewing and when you’re about to end your stitch so it doesn’t unravel.

learn how to put thread in the sewing machine first. then practice sewing in a straight line. draw the line on a piece of extra fabric. if you can do it successfully without any mishaps, try a curvy line. then try working on a project!!! that's all the tips I have, im also a beginner.

If we are talking machine sewing- my recommendation before purchasing a machine would be to look into if ur local library has one u can borrow in their library of things. Some also have sewing clubs u can join! They might be mostly older people but that just means they can help u learn. If u want to purchase a machine; i’d advise buying one second hand (Facebook marketplace is often a good shot) as long as u can find multiple videos on YouTube of how to use that machine (threading it, troubleshooting etc and the manual online). I am personally not a fan of computerized sewing machines (ones with screen) bc if computer part breaks sometimes the machine won’t run. U don’t need a super expensive machine. Tutorial wise: YouTube, find a middle aged woman with a midwestern USA accent and u will be set lol. A lot of videos on TikTok are good but those ladies will talk u through absolutely every step. Many of them also have links in their videos to the free patterns they are following. Fabric wise- start with cheaper fabric so u don’t feel bad if project doesn’t come out as planned. U can also start by altering clothes u already own! Creative reuse stores and Facebook marketplace are often good places to get cheap fabric, buttons, zippers etc (searching things like quilting, sewing, and fabric) are usually best bet. Thread: polyester is usually easiest to work with and easiest to find. Old thread (like from grandmas sewing box lol) is nice if It’s not dry rotted. If u gently tug on thread and it snaps It’s dry rotted and can’t be used sadly 🙁. I’ve actually found Walmart to be best place to buy thread and needles and stuff. I hope this is helpful ❤️❤️

Check your library to see if they have any machine rentals and classes available, otherwise usually if you buy a machine from the locales sewing machine dealer, they may offer free classes with the purchase! I know I get free lessons for life with my machine with any questions since I bought with my local dealer instead of going to the big box store, and then they maintain my machine too 🥰
