A prosecutor questioned a 20-year-old convicted murderer today about his testimony that he's remorseful for the ambush slaying that killed a gang leader and rapper in Tampa, Florida. "Were you remorseful as you were running back with that AR-15 in your hands?" asked Scott Harmon, an assistant Florida state attorney in Hillsborough County. "Like I said, I try to remember nothing from that night," Gathright answered. "Was it traumatic to you as you went back to the car with that AR-15, was it still smoking? Was it still warm in your hands from firing?" Harmon asked. Judge Michelle Sisco sustained Gathright's lawyer's objection. "Were you feeling remorse as you were getting back into the Impala?" Harmon asked. "Like I said, I just try to focus on today and moving forward," Gathright answered. The jury that convicted Gathright of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and three counts of attempted second-degree murder must decide whether to recommend Judge Sisco sentence him and three other men to life in prison or the death penalty. Florida in 2023 changed state law so that juries can recommend death sentences on an 8-4 vote instead of only 12-0. Gathright was one of three gunmen who shot Charles "Julio Foolio" Jones Jr. to death in his Dodge Charger on June 23, 2024, outside a hotel next to the University of South Florida in Tampa. He drove from Jacksonville to Tampa in a Chevrolet Impala, and he and his codefendants followed Jones through the city as he celebrated his 26th birthday. Gathright testified for 30 minutes.
