@ashbg.motherhood: I was asked a question during a podcast interview yesterday while talking about the motherhood penalty: “If there was a magic spell you could cast to make one change that would help get rid of the motherhood penalty, what would it be?” My answer was this… Force all men to take parental leave. Not optional. Not a nice-to-have. Not something that gets quietly discouraged by a workplace culture that sees it as a red flag. Mandatory. Use it or lose it. Every father. Every time. Because the research is unambiguous. When fathers take parental leave, everything changes. They learn what the work actually is. Not in theory. In practice. At 3am. With a baby who will not settle and a house that needs to function and a partner who has been doing this alone and is running on nothing. They cannot unsee it after that. The perception gap (his belief that things are roughly equal, her reality that they are not) closes before it has a chance to open. Divorce rates drop. Domestic labour becomes more equal. Women’s careers recover faster. Children have better outcomes. Men are happier. And women get to begin this chapter of their lives with a partner who actually understands what the chapter contains. One policy. Mandatory paternity leave. Enforced, well paid, and culturally normalised. That is my spell.
My husband had 5 months off and it made my transition into motherhood so much better/easier. I would really struggle otherwise!

My husband doesn’t have paternity leave… he had to use all of his PTO days for the rest of the year to be with us.

My husband gets 10 weeks …. But he has the whole year to use it. This time around he took 2 weeks increments over 6 months & I honestly hated it. We are trying for #2 and I told him I will not have another baby unless he takes his 10 weeks consecutively the day baby is born.

My husband is about to take 17 weeks paternal leave so I can go back to work and study some more. It’s honestly solved so many problems for us.

My husband gets more paid paternity leave than I do. He gets 12 weeks paid, I get 0 and have to use FMLA and my PTO to get paid. 😑 It definitely helped him to be around more for our first, and he’ll be around for the second to help us build a routine that works for the whole family.

We were expecting my husband to have a month of leave because baby was due a week after his one year with the company came up. She was born one day before his one year. He got one week of leave, didn’t even fully disconnect because they kept messaging him for things. And then they fired him a week after his birthday and the day after his first Father’s Day.

Well, at least where I’m from, paternity leave is significantly less than paternity leave. So once again, it’s the system. It’s not dads who aren’t taking a year off because they don’t get a year off lol

My husband has always loved his time off with our kids. He has always taken the max amount available to him, whether or not it comes at a pay cut. He is an incredible dad and I never had to ask him to be one. He loves his kids. He would never put anything before them.

My partner would like to but it doesn’t make financial sense when he earns exponentially more than what they offer.

I absolutely agree! My partner was home with us for 3 months recovering from a surgery and this experience alone was the one that closed our gap.

It’s almost like no one cares about fathers. We should get equal leave.
