Some of the most brutal and evil moments in human history are when we pretend that other people cannot feel things. It’s when we deny other people have an inner life. It’s long been argued that the worst aspects of human nature come out when we objectify other people. If you label somebody as subhuman or monstrous and that justifies your abusing them. But in her 1995 essay ‘Objectification,’ Martha Nussbaum lays out the exact mechanisms at play underneath this objectification. And one key element is known as the ‘denial of subjectivity.’ This is when you deny that somebody else has any inner feelings, or you say that they are not relevant to the discussion. For example, everybody feels pain. Everyone hurts. But if we think that somebody else’s suffering is not worth considering, or that their suffering is somehow different to anybody else’s, then we will find it easier to justify cruelty. We can mistreat people because we imagine we are not causing any harm. Nussbaum’s denial of subjectivity goes hand in hand with what she calls ‘violability.’ This is the idea that we can violate somebody else’s boundaries, and we can see them as something to break or to destroy. Because if you deny somebody’s inner suffering and an inner life, then there’s no problem in stepping in to use and abuse them however we want. If we are to treat people properly, we have to appreciate their inner lives. We have to recognise that people have their own thoughts, their own hopes, their own dreams, and their own loved ones. Everybody suffers and everybody hurts, and we have to respect that in everything that we do.
