The final witness in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial testified she had "the capacity to appreciate right from wrong" when she killed her three children in their Duxbury, Massachusetts, home on Jan. 24, 2023. Gregory Saathoff, a senior psychiatrist in the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Behavioral Analysis Unit, testified as a rebuttal witness for prosecutors, who want jurors to convict Clancy of three counts of murder. Clancy's defense is that she's not guilty by reason of insanity because she was experiencing postpartum psychosis when she strangled 8-month-old Callan, 3-year-old Dawson and 5-year-old Cora and did not understand what she was doing. Saathoff interviewed Clancy in May and June of this year. He also analyzed her medical and criminal case records and interviewed her ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, via video. He testified today (Wednesday, August 26, day 21) about why he believes Clancy knew what she was doing, including her decision to ask her husband to go to the ThreeV restaurant for food and to a CVS pharmacy. "The planning involved prior to the strangling of her children I thought was significant. The searches for distance of ThreeV, the searches of CVS, all done prior to her sending, fairly late in the afternoon, a text asking her husband if he didn't mind takeout from ThreeV," Saathoff said. "A witness during a time when one is committing a crime can intervene, not just report, but also intervene," he continued. "And so the fact that this was done without any witness present during a time where she had asked the potential witness to to go on a longer errand also I thought was significant." Saathoff also cited "concealment." "The children were strangled all in the basement, and according to Mr. Clancy, the door to his office had been closed when he arrived to the basement. timing was really, really significant in this. There was a window of time that Ms. Clancy was aware of, in which she would need to kill her three children, as well as to kill herself, which she expected would happen," Saathoff said. Clancy's lawyer Kevin Reddington cross-examined Saathoff today. Jurors are expected to hear closing arguments on Thursday, then they will begin deliberating. #law #court #MentalHealth
