“The bison was at least 6ft tall, and the victim was several feet above him.” A tourist was tossed 8-feet into the air at a campsite in Wyoming’s Yellowstone national park after coming across an angry bull bison. The man, named in media reports as 65-year-old Carl Islom-McDaniel, was attacked. By the 2,000lb (900kg) mammal while he was with his grandson near the Bridge Bay campground on Friday. A photographer who captured the incident that left the grandfather with several broken bones said the bison was “agitated, pissed off and charging anything and everything”. Mike MacLeod told Wyoming’s Cowboy State Daily newspaper said that he was just trying to capture some “dramatic footage” of the Bison which was running through the campground charging at children taken pictures of it on their phones. Mr MacLeod said the victim was walking down the road while the animal was sitting in the dust. The man and his grandson then started taking cell phone pictures of the Bison “before it started to get up”. He said the grandfather appeared to realise what was going to happen and was, “like, ‘OK, time to leave’.” The pair went behind some trees. After being momentarily distracted by a pickup truck, the bison turned his attention to where the man and his grandson were, the photographer explained. While the grandson got away, the bison chased the grandfather around the trees and then “hooked him with his left horn on his hip and tossed him in the air”. “He made a perfect flip and landed on his side. The bison was at least 6ft tall, and the victim was several feet above him,” Mr MacLeod explained. “I was really afraid he was going to gore the guy on the ground, so I stopped videotaping and ran at the bison, yelled loud, and was trying to be as big and intimidating as possible.” Other people did the same and the bison later left the scene. Mr MacLeod said the injured man was following the park’s rules, keeping a safe distance away from the bison when it attacked. Officials advise visitors to stay at least 100 yards (90 meters) away from bears, wolves and cougars – and a minimum of 25 yards away from all other animals, including bison and elk, and if an animal moves closer, to back away. The attack happened during bison mating season, when the males seek to show off their physical prowess and stamina in a contest for mating with a bison cow. Mr Islom-McDaniel was said to have remained conscious while waiting for emergency services to arrive and was in good spirits, cracking jokes.
