@pochespace: Opened in 1902, Macy's Herald Square is "the world's largest department store" and one of New York City's most recognizable commercial landmarks. Designed by Theodore de Lemos and A.W. Cordes, the original Broadway building was expanded in 1924, 1928, and 1931 under architect Robert D. Kohn, creating the vast complex that occupies nearly an entire block. Its architecture reflects this evolution, with the original Beaux-Arts design giving way to later Art Deco additions. Inside, the store retains its fully original wooden escalators on the 9th floor of the 34th Street entrance; among the oldest still in operation. They remain one of its most distinctive historic teatures. The building's unusual relationship with the adjacent property at Broadway and 34th Street is central to its history. While assembling the site, Macy's was unable to purchase the corner building, reportedly because it had been acquired to prevent the company from creating what would become the world's largest department store. Rather than alter its plans, Macy's constructed the flagship around the independently owned building, later leasing its façade for the installation of the iconic red-and-white "shopping bag" billboard. After more than sixty years as a Herald Square landmark, the billboard was removed over the weekend in late July 2026 as part of plans by the property's owner to modernize the advertising structure. Beyond its architectural significance, Macy's Herald Square occupies a unique place in American culture. Since 1924, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has made the store synonymous with Thanksgiving, while its elaborate holiday windows have become an enduring New York tradition. The flagship has also appeared in several films, most famously Miracle on 34th Street, reinforcing its status as both an architectural and cultural icon.
