I dont think I’ve ever fully understood the concept of lobola. As in yes, it’s meant to appreciate the work put into raising your daughter but I’ve always just found it odd, you know? I’ve always believed it would be better if both families came together and agree on a fixed amount to give to the newly wed couple to start their life, instead of it going to the bride’s family. But that’s just my opinion.

Despite what people may have thought, it sent a strong message.When my uncle was alive, he never demanded anything for all the girls he married off. He just emphasised that all he wanted was for his daughters and nieces to be treated well and that if the marriage collapsed the husband shouldn't hesitate to return them. It was the greatest act of love.
