Looking back, if I could give one piece of advice to anyone who wants to live off-grid or deep in the jungle, it would be this: Build a simple outdoor kitchen first. Here in the Amazon, it rains almost all year long. We only have a short dry season, so having a covered place to cook is one of the most important things you can have. When we first moved here, we were so focused on building our home and figuring out how to earn an income that we kept putting the outdoor kitchen off. Looking back, I would build a small outdoor kitchen with wooden stove and oven like I’m doing right now. I can’t tell you how many times I wished we had built even a tiny roof with a wood stove and a wood-fired oven underneath it. It would have made life so much easier. Without a roof, cooking became a daily struggle. There were many days when we had no electricity, no gas to buy, and no dry place to prepare food. Sometimes we had no choice but to eat simple raw foods because we couldn’t cook. A wood stove and a wood-fired oven don’t depend on electricity or gas. In the jungle, firewood is much easier to find than fuel, and once they’re built, they serve you for years. After living here for years, I can honestly say this is the number one survival tip I would give anyone dreaming of off-grid jungle life: build a covered outdoor kitchen with a wood stove and a wood-fired oven before anything else. It may seem like a small project, but it will make your daily life easier than almost anything else.❤️
