A car crash had happened on the access road to 945 W Bay Avenue, right by the corner of CR 105 and Lighthouse Drive. Smith pulled up and saw a black 2017 Acura TSX had hit a black 2014 Porsche Cayenne. He first talked to the Acura driver, a 25-year-old named Shauna. Then, when Officer Joel Sawyer showed up to help, they spoke with the Porsche driver, a 27-year-old man. Shauna explained to Sawyer that she was in a fight with her boyfriend. She was staring at her phone, and that's when she rear-ended the car ahead. At first, she said she had come from the nearby Wawa store. Later, she changed it to heading home from Mickey’s Tavern in Tuckerton. She owned up to drinking one-and-a-half Blue Moon beers. The smell of booze on her breath, plus other signs she was tipsy, made the officers ask her to do sobriety tests. Sawyer began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus check. He spotted jerking eyes, no smooth tracking, shakes at the edge, and starts before 45 degrees. Next came the Walk and Turn. Shauna missed touching heel to toe each step. She even walked backward on the way back. The last one was One Leg Stand. She didn't lift her foot right and dropped it too soon. The crash, her booze admission, and flunking the tests led to her arrest for drunk driving. They towed her car for a 12-hour hold under John’s Law. Sawyer drove her to the station for booking. There, they read her the standard statement for drivers. She said no to breath tests. Once done, her dad picked her up after signing the liability warning. Cops gave her these tickets: driving drunk, refusing the test, reckless driving, and using a phone while holding it.
