@askpaindoc: One of the biggest misconceptions about chronic pain is that people stop doing things because they’re lazy or unmotivated. The reality is much different. When you’re living with pain every day, everything comes with a cost. Getting dressed. Going to work. Grocery shopping. Cooking dinner. Taking a shower. Even spending time with the people you love can require more physical and mental energy than most people realize. What others see is the task getting done. What they don’t see is the pain it took to do it, the rest you needed beforehand, or the flare-up that may come afterward. That doesn’t mean you should never move. Staying active is often an important part of managing chronic pain. But there’s a difference between choosing to rest because your body needs it and avoiding life because you don’t care. If you’ve been feeling guilty for needing a break, give yourself the same compassion you’d give someone else.
