Our school used to have a “card of shame” that a student would have to wear around their neck for the whole day. It was called the “Defaulter’s Card,” and it said, “I am a defaulter. I used the Nepali language.”

I'm at least glad to hear that they only need to say sorry or handwriting as punishment (fined too). back then, we used to get fined and beaten.

Lmao, we used to get fined Rs 5 every time we spoke Nepali. By the end of the year, the teacher would pick two kids to use the money to buy snacks for the whole class, and we'd have a little party.

it is better i think! because they can learn nepali everywhere in the country because we are in nepal but english you can only learn at school! i hope my daughter school will be like that… but my in laws sometimes if my daughter talk to me in english they wouldn’t allow her to talk, what kind of mindset they have? 🤭

they used to beat the shit out of us at an assembly floor the next day. MFs even appointed a secret monitor everyday among students when returning home. Speaking Nepali was legal after we got off the bus. And monitors snitched everyone who spoke Nepali on the way home. I snitched too. 😂

We actually had to write I will never speak Nepali again and was fined 5 rupees per word. Also they would announce our name in assembly that was the worst part.

Because, as Nepalis, even if we know how to speak English, many of us lack the confidence to actually use it. That’s why I used to fine my students not to punish them, but to encourage them to speak English with their friends from a young age. Later, when they travel or move abroad, communicating becomes much easier because they’re already confident.

Children in Nepal speak English from a young age whereas I have found that in many other countries such as many European nations people including the young often do not speak it as much as people in my country do😊🙃
