The Gospels portray her welcoming Jesus into their home and working hard to care for her guest while Mary listened at his feet. Jesus gently reminded Martha that her anxiety was distracting her, but he did not dismiss the value of her service. Her most powerful moment comes after Lazarus dies. Meeting Jesus outside Bethany, Martha declares her belief that he is the Messiah and trusts him even in grief. Jesus then raises Lazarus from the tomb. Later medieval tradition claimed that Martha travelled to Provence and tamed the terrifying Tarasque, but this is legend rather than biblical history. In 2021, the Catholic memorial on July 29 was expanded to honour Martha, Mary and Lazarus together.
