MDM-Locked vs CPID Phone: What is the real difference? Both types of phones may be available at lower prices in Pakistan’s used-phone market, but their risks are not the same. An MDM-locked phone is still connected to a company, school or organisation’s device-management system. The organisation may be able to apply restrictions, change settings, or remotely lock and erase the device. MDM itself is a legal business-management technology, but buying a phone that has not been officially released by its organisation can be risky. A temporary bypass may disappear after a factory reset or during online setup. A CPID phone usually refers to a device whose original IMEI or network identity has been altered. “CPID approved” is a market term, not an official PTA approval category. PTA can block devices with duplicated, cloned or non-compliant IMEIs, and IMEI cloning or duplication is punishable under Pakistani law. Before purchasing, factory-reset an MDM phone and complete the setup using Wi-Fi. For a CPID phone, dial *#06#, compare every IMEI with Settings and the original box, and verify it through PTA’s official system.
