@justplayin7: Family is supposed to be the place where we feel safe, supported, and accepted. But for many people, that isn’t always the reality. Sometimes the people who know us the best can also be the ones who hurt us the most. That raises a difficult question that almost everyone has an opinion on. Some people believe family is forever. They feel that no matter how bad things get, you should always find a way to forgive, work through your differences, and keep the relationship alive. After all, you only get one family, and cutting someone off should be the absolute last resort. Others believe that sharing DNA doesn’t automatically give someone unlimited access to your life. They argue that respect, trust, and kindness should exist in every relationship, including family relationships. If someone repeatedly brings chaos, manipulation, disrespect, or constant negativity into your life, creating distance may be the healthiest choice. Of course, every situation is different. Some family disagreements can be resolved with honest conversations, time, and healthier boundaries. Other situations may be far more complicated. There isn’t one answer that fits everyone, and that’s exactly why this conversation is so interesting. So where do you stand? Should people do everything possible to keep family together, even after years of conflict? Or is there a point where protecting your own peace becomes more important than maintaining a relationship simply because you’re related? I’m not looking for a “right” answer because there probably isn’t one. I’m interested in hearing different perspectives and real-life experiences. If you’ve been in this situation, what did you learn, and what advice would you give someone facing the same decision? Let’s have a respectful discussion in the comments. #FamilyDrama #HealthyBoundaries #LifeQuestions #RespectOverEverything #CommentYourOpinion

I haven't spoke to my sister in over 10 years. She always has drama everywhere she goes and I wanted my peace. I don't miss her at all. I don't feel guilty about my decision. My little family love our peace. She tried talking to me at my Momma's funeral and I walked away.

If your family did you wrong after all you did was help raise them, then yes it's ok to let them go. Im good with it, I'll be civil around family gatherings but other than that, I don't care😁

Yes it's okay to cut family members from your life. It's never good to keep toxic relationships.

I cut my sister out of my life, we don’t speak, we don’t hang out, it’s been years. If she needed me I would help her because she’s family. But otherwise I don’t want anything to do with her.

Yes- sometimes the only way to heal and be your best self is to cut out those that bring you down, regardless of how much pain it initially causes

Sadly the most toxic person in someone's life is more than likely a family member. So yes it is ok.

I cut mine out at 16 I told my step dad and my mom before I ran away they were dead to me and would never see me again I am 47 and have never gone back. I got word from a lawyer that found me that the last of my line is dead that was 2 years ago... gave him a check told him my family died when I was left told him to destroy everything and leave... some of us can completely erase people , family from our lives and keep it moving others cant and they return... what few know is erasing blood comes with a price and consequences some of us are strong enough to bear it others arent and they return... but for us that can and have paid the price I have learned at the end of the day its only you...ive no regrets I just know when my time comes the name the line ends..yes that reality hurts but again its a burden I dont regret carrying... my advice to those who take this route step away from your situation completely reevaluate everything because once you take this path death makes it permanent there are no what ifs or I should haves... my situation was different so I was willing to pay for what came with my choice... its all done now but the pain that comes back reminds me of my choice its one thing that is a forever reminder...

I think it’s completely okay to take space from your family, even if that space lasts for years. Sometimes you need distance to heal, establish boundaries, or figure out who you are.
But there’s something no one tells you when you’re 20 and decide to go “no contact”: you’re making that decision with a 20-year-old’s understanding of what your future will look like.
When you’re young, it’s easy to feel like family is replaceable. You have dozens of friends, relationships, coworkers, and an entire social life around you. But as you get older, that circle gets smaller. Friends move away, get married, have children, drift apart, or simply become less available. By 50 or 60, you may be lucky to have one or two close friends from your youth you can truly rely on.
That doesn’t mean you owe your family unlimited access to you or should tolerate toxic or abusive behavior. Sometimes distance is absolutely necessary.
But there’s a difference between taking space and permanently burning a bridge. You can distance yourself for a few years without deciding that the relationship can never exist again.
Because when you’re young, you think you’re surrounded by people. As you get older, you realize how rare it is to have someone who remembers every version of you.
