For those asking about why not just use apples. This is a depression error recipe. If I remember correctly apples were a little harder to get your hands on back in the day. So families when they wanted a sweet treat would make something like this. There’s another recipe from the depression era that uses water, butter and I believe a little flour and sugar in a pie crust and you bake it.

My mom made this with saltines back in the 60's and 70's when food was tight. It was always a special treat. 🥰

We made this back in the 90’s! I remember thinking there is no way this will work or taste like apple pie….but it tastes just like apple pie!!
