Next month it might be a CT, or a PET, or an ultrasound tech pressing cold gel on the spot we're all quietly hoping stays boring forever. You probably don't think about this part. Why would you? For you, a Tuesday is a Tuesday. For me, it's a coin flip I have to schedule in advance. Here's the psychology of it, because I promise I'm not being dramatic: when you've heard "it's cancer" once, your brain never fully unlearns the association between waiting for results and bracing for impact. It's called anticipatory anxiety, and it doesn't care that I've been NED for a while now. My nervous system still treats every scan like round one, even when my calendar treats it like an errand. So while you're texting me a meme or tagging me in something funny, there's a decent chance I'm actually lying inside a very loud magnet, holding my breath on command, watching the ceiling tile I've memorized like an old friend. And when I get out, I'll probably still answer your text like nothing happened. Because most of the time, nothing did. That's the job now — living normally around an abnormal thing. This is just survivorship. Not a crisis every time, not a headline, just... maintenance. The quiet cost of getting to stay here. So next time you're thinking of your cancer survivor friend on a random weekday — check the group chat.
