@greatertexasfootankle: Wearing tight shoes over time can contribute to the development of a bunion, which is a bony deformity that can become painful and make it difficult to find comfortable shoes. Besides the discomfort, many people also feel less confident wearing sandals or open-toed shoes. But that's not the only problem bunions can cause. Wearing tight shoes can squash your other toes, leading to what's called a hammertoe. Instead of lying flat, the toe begins to bend upward at the joint. This can cause painful calluses and corns on the knuckle, as well as increased pressure on the tip of the toe and toenail since the toe is more likely to hit the ground with each step. This patient had, unfortunately, this happen to her 2nd, 3rd, and 4th toe; however, the 3rd and 4th were not causing her pain so we only operated on her bunion and her 2nd toe. It was a great success. So, if you are experiencing discomfort from your bunion to the point where it affects your daily activities, visit your local podiatrist.
