I don’t say um but I pause longer than normal between words. It makes me feel like I am speaking poorly. How bad is that?

Recruiter for 10 years…the moment you say one ummm, like, and of those filler words…that’s all I hear. And I subconsciously start counting. There is a tone or a cadency I hear immediately & will know if you’ll get an offer or not.

I can admit this because I’m no longer in corporate… When I used to interview sales people, I would count how many times they said “Umm” and write it on my feedback form. Those almost always went in the no-hire pile. In a sales environment, it discredits the person speaking.
