Before he was crowned the “D’Hook Master” and became a defining voice of Ugandan urban radio, Freddie Sakura (born Freddie Sakura Mwebaze) was just a young boy in Western Uganda captivated by the magic of the airwaves. Watching veteran presenter Daniel Vien on television and listening to him on Capital FM ignited Sakura’s passion for broadcasting, giving him the inspiration to pursue a career behind the microphone. Born on April 22nd, Sakura’s family roots trace back to Bushenyi (Kyabasene, Kyeizooba, Igara). He attended the prestigious Ntare School in Mbarara for his high school education. His radio career kicked off during his Senior Six vacation at Radio West in Mbarara, where he hosted a love-themed night program titled *Goodnight Melodies*. Moving to Kampala around 2003, he joined Dembe FM under station manager Peter Kaba, gaining early fame for presenting a specialized reggae program in a unique broken patois. Sakura’s legendary 15-year tenure at 93.3 KFM began as a total accident. On February 6, 2006, dressed in a black suit, Sakura walked into KFM’s Namuwongo-based studios looking for a job and bumped into Peter Kaba, who was now managing the station. When scheduled presenter Denise Akii-Bua fell ill that day, Sakura was immediately thrown on-air to cover her three-hour shift before he had even taken a formal interview or voice test. After passing his voice test two days later, he was handed *Love Line* (later *K-Zone*) and a reggae show called *Hot Spot*. His big break on mid-morning radio came when he was assigned to cover for Dave Junior Kazoora (JKazoora), who was departing for study leave in the UK. Though Kazoora was supposed to train him on the studio mixing boards before leaving, he never did, forcing Sakura to figure out the technology completely on his own. For 15 years, Sakura ruled KFM's 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM slot, earning national acclaim. A 2010 media survey ranked him as the top English-speaking radio presenter in Uganda. Known for his religious preparation, notebook prep work, and balance of relationship advice, mature banter, top-tier music mixes, and cultural proverbs, Sakura built a dedicated fanbase he affectionately called the "K-fam." Over his career, he interviewed international stars like Demarco and local icons like Jose Chameleone, while mentoring a generation of younger broadcasters. In February 2021, after 15 years as the longest-serving presenter at the Namuwongo-based station, Sakura officially bowed out of KFM, reflecting on his journey with the words: *"I came as a boy rolling in the world and now I am leaving as a man with a family, kids, and responsibilities on my shoulders."* An elusively private figure who spent decades successfully dodging cameras, tabloids, and public exposure, Sakura stepped away from active mainstream radio presentation to focus on his family life. Today, he channels his veteran media expertise into behind-the-scenes media consultancy, professional voice-over artistry, production, and his lifelong passion for dramatic arts and theater.
