public service announcement:two things can be true at once- the movie is good; nolan didn't make a good adaptation of the book.

I'm glad she criticized it. I was starting to think I was the one stupid for hating it after all the insults that rained down on me. I heard someone call this movie on of the best of this century

1. The movie is great. 2. The movie is a mediocre adaptation of the Odyssey. 3. Nolan is allowed to take stylistic and creative liberties within reason even if we think it’s ill-thought out (because y’know, entertainment). 4. Wilson is perfectly within her rights to criticise Nolan for what he got wrong or to compliment him for what he got right. All of these things are true simultaneously.

Are any of us surprised you skipped her final paragraph: “Despite all this, the release of The Odyssey is still an event to celebrate. In what we are told is the streaming era, this epic is bringing audiences back to cinemas. In what we are told is a time of declining literacy and the ‘death of the humanities’, translations of The Odyssey, including mine, are flying off the shelves. Some of those who buy the book or show up in cinemas to watch Tom Holland may go on to study ancient Greek. Perhaps the film will persuade a few college administrators not to cut their literature, language and history departments. Nolan, who studied English at University College London – where students still study The Odyssey as a first year ‘foundational text’ – is doing his best to get the general public reading again, and I am grateful.”

Honestly was so thrilled to see her tear Nolan to shreds. I feel like he only brought up him adapting her version of the Odyssey to try and deflect criticism, when even she recognizes he went and did all of that.

She was like "don't put my name on this" and I have to agree, I really appreciate her take on translating the Odyssey as innovative and necessary for our age, but I don't appreciate Nolan dragging her name through the mud because he wants an excuse to "modernise" and abuse the narrative of an ancient epic poem.

It makes me so happy to see a Historian correct an Entertainer and EVERYONE loses their minds. Even better, a woman historian and a male entertainer. Knowledge v Ego, Translation vs Interpretation.

I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinions but i read why she didnt like it and it came across as 'the story can only be done this specific way or its not good' type of BS. because the story is over thousands of years old and a myth its not a story that needs to be told only one way and its fair territory for everyone to make an adaption with just like Circe Madeline Miller, Percy Jackson, etc. and also like im sorry no i dont need the scenes of Odesseus not being faithful to his wife while still trying to get home to her even if it was in original. Emily Wilson didnt create the story so has no leg to stand on to tell people HOW it needed to be adapted

Hollywood is pissing me off. Stop calling it an adaptation when you just going to go off grid from the source material. Withering Heights was terrible enough now this.

Hot take, Nolan’s Odyssey is thematically more consistent than the original epic, and the only critique I’d seriously give it is in the costume and prop department, but I can overlook that because it’s pretty clear that Nolan wanted to portray the greeks in dark armor as a visual representation that they are the bad guys, and armor design isn’t going to deter me from enjoying an adaptation, because it’s an adaptation. There is no proof anywhere that Nolan said this was “the most accurate adaptation”. The entire point is to apply modern themes to the story, to make it more accessible to modern audiences. The gods existing as manifestations of nature rather than people just showing up makes way more sense, as that is how people actually interact with the gods, and leaving it ambiguous if Athena was actually present, or as a manifestation of Odysseus’ guilt, is fantastic writing for the version of the character that Nolan wanted to portray. Nolan wanted to focus on the end of the bronze age, rather than Hermes giving Odysseus a bag of winds, and that should be ok for what Nolan wanted to portray. Emily Wilson’s critique comes off as pretentious and snobby more than anything, as if Nolan is the first director who’s version of the Odyssey needs to be 1 to 1 to the original, which would suck as a movie, full stop. The great thing about the Odyssey guys, is that it’s a timeless story, so it can be adapted again

As a nolan fan, i will always appreciate his work. As a fan of the odyssey, he didnt translate the beauty of the story into the film.
